Ecstasy of Gold Tour of Spain 2016

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
Here's your chance to join a select group of film fans on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to Spain, to visit the filming locations of the famous Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good, The Bad & The Ugly and Once Upon A Time In The West.

Since 2016 marks the 50th anniversary of The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, now might be a good time to visit the filming locations and see where it all happened.

Enjoy the scenery while listening to Ennio Morricone's haunting soundtracks, visit the still remaining western towns originally built as film sets for these movies, wander through the Almerian desert like Tuco and Blondie did, or visit the MacBain house in Sweetwater.

So put on your poncho, mount your mule and step into Sergio Leone's vision of the Old West in a dazzling 7 day adventure that will bring you from the the Almeria and Tabernas Deserts in the South all the way to the mountains around Covarrubias in the North. Covering 1500 kilometres, this guided self-drive tour will show you everything Spain has to offer.

Your mission will be to meet the rest of the group at Marissol's house on Monday September 19th. From there we will take you on a seven day tour, ending in Covarrubias, near Sad Hill Cemetery, on Monday September 26th.

Monday 19/9

Your day of arrival and time to pick up your rental car.

You will self-drive to Almeria / Cabo de Gata and meet the group at the Cortijo el Sotillo Hotel, which doubled for Marisol’s house in A Fistful of Dollars. The hotel is located just outside San José in Cabo de Gata National Park and from here the tour will start.

Day 1:

Tuesday 20/9

The tour commences with a round trip by car through the Cabo de Gata National Park. We will visit many locations from the Dollars trilogy, but will also make a few sidesteps to non-westerns, like Never Say Never Again and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. We will enjoy lunch at Albaricoques, which doubled for San Miguel in Fistful of Dollars and Agua Caliente in For A Few Dollars More.

After completing our round trip through the National Park in the afternoon, we will return to the Cortijo el Sotillo Hotel, where we will spend the night again.

Day 2:

Wednesday 21/9

We will drive towards the town of Tabernas, where we will visit some smaller locations on the way. The Tabernas Desert area is well known for the western towns, built especially for the Sergio Leone films, now theme parks collectively known as Mini-Hollywood.

We will spend the next two nights in wooden cabins at Fort Bravo / Texas Hollywood.

Day 3:

Thursday 22/9

Today we will visit the western town sets of Oasys Park, built for For A Few Dollars More and re-used in Good, Bad & Ugly, and Western Leone Park, built for Once Upon a Time in the West.

We see western shows, can-can shows and, as an option, you will have the chance to ride a horse through the film sets of El Paso and/or Sweetwater.
Carlo Simi built the El Paso set, which still stands in the Tabernas Desert
Day 4:

Friday 23/9

After breakfast, we will depart Mini-Hollywood and drive to the disused train tracks, used as Tucumcari Station, Sweetwater Station and the opening shootout in Once Upon a Time in the West.

After that, we’ll return to the highway for a five hour ride to Madrid, to see some locations around the Spanish capital. The night will be spent at Hotel Gran Hotel Almenar, just outside the city.

Day 5:

Saturday 24/9

We will visit the site at Hoyo de Manzanares, where a western town-set used to be, that served as San Miguel in Fistful of Dollars and Tucumcari in For a Few Dollars More.

After another short stop at the former White Rocks location, a two and a half hour drive will bring us to Covarrubias, where we will spend the afternoon and night. Your hotel will be Hotel Nuevo Arlanza.

Min/Max:

  • This tour requires a minimum number of 10 travellers. It is estimated that this requirement will be reached within a few weeks, but we do reserve the right to cancel the tour, if the minimum requirement is not reached at the end of February. So please wait for the final confirmation that the tour will proceed, before making your travel arrangements.
  • There is a group maximum of 20 people for this tour.

Flights:

  • You will need to make your own flight arrangements, since this is not included in the tour.
  • Since the tour starts and ends 800 kilometres apart, it is recommended that you book two one-way tickets, to and from different locations/airports.
  • Almeria is in the South of Spain and does have its own (small) airport. Connecting flights to Almeria are available from Spanish flight services like Iberia.
  • Probably the best option is to fly to Malaga and rent a car there. It’s a two and a half hour ride from Malaga to Almeria and your hotel for the first nights.
  • Probably the best airport option for your return flight will be Madrid. The Burgos area, where the tour ends, does not have its own commercial airport. It’s a two hour drive from your hotel to Madrid Airport, so make sure your return flight does not depart too early.

Hotels:

  • Our advertised tour price is based on double occupancy.
  • If you travel alone, you will have to share a room. We can assist you with finding a roommate.
  • It is not possible to pay extra for single occupancy.

Car stuff:

  • You will need to make your own rental car arrangements, since this is not included in the tour.
  • As said, the tour starts and ends 800 kilometres apart. Since you will most likely arrive at and depart from different airports, it is recommended that you book a one-way car rental, to avoid having to return the car 800 kilometres away. A helpful website for one-way car rentals is http://www.oneway-carhire.com/Spain.aspx . When sharing a car, the estimated rental costs per person will be € 125 (excl fuel) for the duration of the tour.
  • Even though we will drive through desert and mountain regions, it is not necessary to rent a 4x4 capable car.
  • If you are travelling alone and want to share a rental car with one or more people, please inform us about this, so we can assist you with finding a co-pilot.
  • It is recommended that there are at least two people in each car. This way, one will be able to navigate while the other steers. Also, it saves you both money..
  • Obviously we will travel in convoy as much as possible. You will receive several contact options in case you lose contact with the group while on the road.

Payment & cancellation policy:
  • After you signed up for this tour, you will receive a confirmation.
  • Once the required minimum number of travellers is reached, you will be notified and you will be sent an invoice for the tour, to be paid within 14 days.
  • Your reservation is finalized when your payment is received.
  • A contract will exist between us from the date we issue the confirmation invoice
  • When you decide to cancel your participation in the tour at a later stage, we will try to sell your place to the first in line on our waiting list (if there is any).

  • If we are not able to sell your place to anyone else, we unfortunately cannot refund you.
